Catching up with DesireePublished: January 9, 2019
Each year, Boardwalk awards one full year rental scholarship to a student in need through the Princess Shop. Upon receiving the scholarship, the student can live rent-free for one year in a Boardwalk Community. Boardwalk is proud to partner with the Princess Shop - a non-profit organisation that seeks to enhance the graduation experience for female-identified students in need. The Princess Shop provides them with mentorship, support, and the tools to pursue success after graduation.
Desiree Friesen’s ambition and commitment to reaching her educational goals earned her the award in 2018. She has been able to start saving for her and her kid’s futures while continuing to pursue post-secondary education in Criminal Justice.
“The scholarship has been amazing. I’ve been able to catch up on past-due bills that were extremely high and use my money towards things for my kids. Last year all my money went strictly towards paying rent and never-ending bills. I’ve even started a savings account and can leave money in there.”
Moving into Meadowview Park Estates has given her a safe place for her kids, a place she can focus on her studies, and a place to call home.
Desiree’s story is truly inspiring and just proves the difference one act of kindness can have. The rental scholarship will have a lasting impact on her even after the scholarship funding ends. Beyond the financial impact, the scholarship gives her hope and a refreshed outlook on her goals.
“It has been wonderful not to have to worry about how I am going to make ends meet with my two kids and still manage to stay in school. I feel so blessed to have been chosen; it’s almost like a new life or a reset on the past for a better future!”
